If you want to introduce a child to shooting, the first question is usually "how old do they have to be?" The answer depends on the range. Each range sets its own age rules, and they vary a lot, from age 8 with a parent at some ranges to 12 at others. At several ranges, renting a gun has a higher age limit than shooting does.

This page collects the youth rules, kid pricing and youth classes we found on the websites of Kansas ranges in our directory, plus two statewide programs built for kids: 4-H Shooting Sports and Hunter Education.

Youth classes at Kansas ranges

Bullseye Indoor Shooting Range, Wichita runs a Youth Rifle Class for ages 8-17. A legal guardian must attend but isn't charged. The class runs about 4 hours, costs $50, and includes the range fee, targets, instruction, eye and ear protection and .22LR ammo. Classes take 3-10 students, and you sign up by phone or in person. Dates are on the Bullseye calendar. Bullseye's Women's Handgun 101 also accepts girls 12 and up with a legal guardian.

Centerfire Shooting Sports, Olathe mentions youth shooting leagues on its site and says first-time shooters and families are welcome. Ask the range about current youth programs and ages.

Michael Murphy & Sons, Augusta is a sporting clays and skeet course with youth pricing ($15 per 50 targets for ages 14 and under), gun rentals and a lessons page. Shotgun sports can be a good next step for kids who like moving targets.

4-H Shooting Sports

Kansas 4-H Shooting Sports, run through K-State Research and Extension, is open to youth ages 8-18 (4-H age) who are enrolled in 4-H. Disciplines include archery, air pistol, air rifle, BB gun, muzzleloading, pistol, rifle, shotgun, hunting skills and western heritage. Programs are led by certified volunteer coordinators and instructors.

Not every county has a certified program, so 4-H says to check with your local extension office first. Your county extension office can tell you about project meetings and practice times.

Hunter Education

If your child wants to hunt someday, Kansas Hunter Education is the course to know about. KDWP says state law requires anyone born on or after July 1, 1957 to complete an approved course before hunting in Kansas, unless they are 15 or younger and directly supervised by an adult 18 or older. KDWP also says students must be at least 11 to be certified.

KDWP says the course covers hunter responsibility, ethics, basic gun safety, field safety, ammunition, bowhunting and conservation. Course dates and formats are on KDWP's Hunter Ed Courses page. Check KDWP for current rules rather than relying on this summary.

Yes. Bullseye runs a Youth Rifle Class for ages 8-17 ($50, guardian attends free). 4-H Shooting Sports may also have a club in Sedgwick County. Ask your extension office.

Is there a youth deer season in Kansas?

Yes. KDWP's Sportsmen's Calendar listed the 2026 youth and disability season as September 5-13, 2026. KDWP says youth 17 and younger may hunt that season only under the immediate supervision of an adult 18 or older. Check KDWP for current dates and permit rules.
